Work permits

As an EU citizen you have the right to work - for an employer or self-employed person - in all EU countries without the need of a work permit.

 

Exception - Croatian citizens are still subject to temporary restrictions on working in the EU.

 

When you work in a country you have the right to live there under certain conditions.

 

If you live and work in another EU country, it is important to be aware of the consequences for:

 

your benefits (sick leave, maternity / paternity, pensions, benefits under occupational accidents and diseases, death benefits, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits and more.)

where you need to pay taxes.

 

Your right to work in another EU country can be restricted by transitional arrangements until June 30, 2020

 

Most EU countries have abolished these restrictions. However, you may need a work permit in the following countries:

 

Austria

Malta

Netherlands

Slovenia

United Kingdom

 

Jobs in Croatia

Your right to work as an employee in Croatia may be restricted by transitional arrangements. You may need a work permit if you are a citizen of one of the following countries:

 

Austria

Malta

Netherlands

Slovenia

United Kingdom

Jobs in Switzerland

Most EU citizens do not need a work permit in Switzerland. Restrictions are in force only to citizens of Croatia, who still need a work permit.

Under the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons, citizens of Switzerland are free to live and work in the EU.
