What is an Electronic Vignette? From January 1, 2019, an electronic vignette for use of the paid road network was introduced in Bulgaria. Everyone, as the owner or user of a car, has to buy a vignette that only applies to the specific car and for a fixed period. Unlike the car's windshield stickers issued earlier, there will already be an electronic vignette. It will not be on paper and the paid vignette fee will be visible in the Electronic Toll Collection System. The vignette is a document but electronic. He certifies several things - that a vignette fee has been paid for a specific car with a registration number and category, date of payment and validity. And the fact that the fee is paid for a specific car also means that if a person decides to sell his car, the electronic vignette will continue to be valid for the car until its expiration. How to buy an electronic vignette? An electronic vignette can be purchased in several ways: • electronically; • through a bank; • by card or cash at points of sale; • through self-charging terminals, which will be located on the road network and in regional cities. What is the control of electronic vignettes? The fact that the system is electronic and there are no stickers on the windows will not mean that the driver is not subject to verification that he has paid his vignette fee if he is using the paid road network. The control authorities will check the payment in the electronic system. When inspected by the road control authorities, the owners and users of road vehicles are not obliged to present a document certifying the purchased vignette.
